Empowering Educators Through Advocacy

Anyone who is invested in strengthening adult and alternative education in Michigan is encouraged to attend Advocacy Day. Participants may include teachers, program directors, workforce development and education partners, graduates, current learners, community members, employers, and other advocates who believe in expanding opportunities for adult learners across our state.

There is no cost to attend Advocacy Day. MACAE will provide lunch for all registered attendees.

No. You do not need to schedule meetings with lawmakers on your own. Once you are registered, MACAE will work to connect with your legislators and coordinate meetings on your behalf, helping to ensure your scheduled meetings do not overlap with other legislative meetings.If you have specific questions about your scheduled meetings, please contact Kristen Swiantek at director@macae.org.

You may meet directly with a legislator or with a member of their staff. Both are valuable conversations—legislative staff play an important role in informing and advising lawmakers.Meetings are typically 15–20 minutes, so be prepared to briefly introduce yourself, share your program’s impact in the legislator’s district, and clearly communicate MACAE’s priorities and your ask. Use the provided talking points and leave-behind materials to support your conversation.After your meeting, be sure to follow up with a thank-you email to continue building relationships with legislators and their offices.

MACAE will provide a folder with talking points and handouts to help guide your conversations with lawmakers. Be sure to bring a valid state ID, as you may need it to access the House and Senate office buildings. Professional attire is encouraged, as you will be meeting with legislators and advocating on behalf of adult and alternative education.
