Position: Residential Alternative School Teacher

Beaver Island, Michigan

Qualifications:
• Bachelor Degree with current appropriate certification, (Highly Qualified)
• Secondary Math, English, Social Studies and/or Science preferred
• Εxperience in alternative school setting preferred.
• Residential camp experience preferred
• Must enjoy working with youth 16-21 yrs of age in a 24 hour residential setting

BEAVER ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE SCHOOL
Residential Teacher
REPORTS TO: Beaver Island Lighthouse School - Site Supervisor

Qualifications:
• Current State of Michigan Teaching certificate secondary
• Experience teaching in an alternative school setting preferred
• Εnjoy working/living with youth in a resident rustic campus setting.
Job Goal: Provide instruction and mentoring in a residential alternative education setting. Assist youth, at risk of dropping out, in achieving academic progress and career planning. The Program services approximately 30 students per semester.

Terms of Employment: Employment in accordance with TBAISD Michigan Works! Division / Youth Services.

Responsibilities:
• Instruct students in citizenship and individualized course work in order to aid students in meeting the requirements for high school graduation and/or GED preparation

• Assist and cooperate with Site Supervisor to organize student records, determine credits/classes needed for all students and develop a written individualized education program for each student

• Identify pupil’s needs and cooperate with other professional staff in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning issues

• Administer and interpret standardized tests to assist students in making appropriate educational and career choices

• Develop lesson plans and appropriate instructional aids

• Select and requisition books, instructional materials, supplies and maintain inventory

• Provide individual and group instruction appropriate to the needs of the pupils and requirements of activities being performed

• Evaluate each pupil’s performance, knowledge and skills in courses being taught; prepare progress reports and maintain attendance records

• Attend and supervise all school meals

• Provide adequate supervision at all activities as deemed necessary for the residential school setting

• Prepare buildings for instruction & residency during staff week

• Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive and clean environment to ensure the physical and mental well being of all students

• Supervise resident youth cabin and enforce all established rules for the purpose of building a strong, clean, orderly and committed community within the cabin

• Encourage/assist students in continuing education and training

• Be a strong, supportive, adult role model for youth including health, hygiene, grooming, communication skills, teamwork, problem solving and life-long learning

• Assist in scheduling speakers/field trips as needed

• Maintain professional competence and continued growth

• Μaintain first aid & CPR certification

• Provide for supervision in absence of the site supervisor

• Keep Site Supervisor informed of problem areas and concerns

• Perform other duties, as deemed necessary by the Site Supervisor / Education Specialist / Program Coordinator
Evaluation:

To be conducted by Site Supervisor / Education Specialist / Program Coordinator, at the end of the program year, or as deemed necessary.

BEAVER ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE SCHOOL SITE SUPERVISOR

REPORTS TO: Michigan Works Youth Services Coordinator / Educational Specialist

Supervises: Beaver Island Lighthouse School Staff

Qualifications:
• Michigan State Counselor, Teacher’s Certificate Secondary or School Social Work preferred
• Prior experience working with high risk youth in a 24-hour residential setting preferred
• Ability to work with a variety of student achievement levels
• Proven ability to conduct group counseling sessions
• Ability to supervise staff
• Must enjoy working & living with youth, 16-21 years of age, in a 24-hour residential setting

Job Goal: Supervise and maintain an effective residential alternative educational program that will assist “At Risk” youth in achieving academic progress, social growth, and career planning.

Terms of Employment: Employment in accordance with TBAISD Michigan Works! Youth Services.

Responsibilities:

• Keep supervisor informed of problem areas and concerns

• Supervise all Lighthouse School staff and coordinate work schedules and responsibilities

• Responsible for assuring that established school curriculum and philosophy is implemented and updated, as required

• Supervise the coordination of all school activities and the physical campus / building needs

• Determine teaching assignments in cooperation with residential teachers each semester

• Supervise and emphasize safety in all aspects of the school program

• Ensure all budget expenditures and purchase order guidelines are carried out as set forth by TBA Michigan Works!

• Supervise student transportation

• Maintain student records, conduct credit evaluations, and class scheduling

• Provide for some classroom instruction as well as individualized and group counseling for students

• Provide disciplinary action when necessary using established procedures

• Attend and supervise all meals and student school activities

• Establish and maintain a good working relationship with the local community

• Oversee and facilitate all staff meetings

• Ensure that all established rules and procedures for the school are being enforced

• Μaintain First Aid and CPR certification

• Ensure that first aid inventory is kept current and sanitary

• Ensure that student medications are dispensed appropriately

• Ensure that all health and sanitation guidelines are strictly enforced

• Maintain good communication with parents, home school personnel and Michigan Works! Youth Services Staff

• Provide current inventory information for educational and logistical components

• Be a strong, supportive, adult role model for youth including health, hygiene, communication skills, teamwork, problem solving and life-long learning

• Formally evaluate Lighthouse School staff at end of program year

• Maintain professional growth

• Perform other duties, as deemed necessary by the Program Coordinator / Education Specialist

• Coordinate / collaborate with outside sources to fulfill student needs

Position: Cook / Kitchen Manager for an Alternative School

• Two years related work experience
• Demonstrated previous competence in food preparation for groups
• Knowledge of and ability to teach nutritious meal planning
• Must enjoy working and living with youth, 16-21 years of age, in a 24-hour residential campus setting
• Prior experience working with alternative education students in a residential setting preferred

BEAVER ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE SCHOOL Cook/Kitchen Manager

REPORTS TO: Beaver Island Lighthouse School - Site Supervisor

Qualifications:

• Demonstrated previous competence in food preparation for groups, including but not limited to, menu planning, food ordering and budgeting for approximately 40 individuals.
• Knowledge of and ability to teach nutritious meal planning to students
• Must enjoy working/living with youth in a resident rustic campus setting.
Job Goal:
• Directly responsible for the successful operation of the food service program, including budgeting, kitchen safety, ordering, preparation, cooking, service, clean-up, storage and record keeping in order to assure the standards of the Michigan Works! Youth Service programs.
• Assure that all health standards of the Michigan Works! Youth Services and regulating agencies are met.

Terms of Employment: Employment in accordance with TBAISD Michigan Works! Division / Youth Services.

Responsibilities:

• Delivery of a food service program providing wholesome and enjoyable meals.

• Maintain accurate food budgets and ensure that purchases and financial records are processed as established by the TBAISD/Michigan Works! Youth Services regulations.

• Supervise and instruct youth workers in all aspects of kitchen use to include, but not limited to, food preparation, following recipes, cleanliness, sanitation, menu planning, kitchen safety, food storage and purchasing of food.

• Order and purchase food and kitchen supplies to support a seven-day week operation while focusing on minimizing waste.

• Coordinate with staff for occasional off-site picnic style meals, theme dinners, cookouts, etc.

• Supervise resident youth cabin and enforce all established rules for the purpose of building a strong, clean, orderly and committed community within that cabin.

• Be strong supportive adult role model for students.

• Supervise and be in attendance for all meals that are served.

• Assist with and help supervise other camp activities, including evening programs, off-site trips and student transportation.

• Keep Site Supervisor informed of program activities, problem areas and/or concerns.

• Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the Site Supervisor.

Evaluation: To be conducted by Site Supervisor / Education Specialist / Program Coordinator, at the end of the program year, or as deemed necessary.
