Strong, viable communities offer local residents an opportunity to pursue lifelong learning, recreation, health and exercise in a safe, clean, accessible environment. Community schools that make facilities available for enrichment, recreation and before/after school programs provide a tremendous service and taxpayer value to area residents. This is often where a true appreciation for lifelong learning begins and thrives for all ages.
Priorities:
Support “Full-Service Community Schools,” which includes incentives for all school districts to offer year-round community education programming and coordination.
Language supporting full-service community schools is already included in draft versions of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) which is up for reauthorization. If Michigan is to be aligned with federal requirements and funding opportunities, the State needs to start now to encourage districts to adopt a full-service community school philosophy and programming.
